We endorse the letter to Tony Blair of 27 April 2004 signed by many senior UK diplomats.
In this letter, the diplomats state that they "have watched with deepening concern the policies which you have followed on the Arab-Israel problem and Iraq." You have abandoned "the principles which for nearly four decades have guided international efforts to restore peace in the Holy Land." They call on you to exert real influence over the US, "as a loyal ally", urgently to change course. "If that is unacceptable or unwelcome," they conclude, "there is no case for supporting policies which are doomed to failure."
We believe that these diplomats are correct and that your unconditional support for George W Bush makes Britain culpable in the great tragedy unfolding for the people of the Middle East.

Unconditional support for the US renders the UK an impotent ally. The UK government needs to use its influence to kerb the US government's policies, and must back this up with a serious intention to withdraw support if no change is forthcoming.
