To the Yukon Legislative Assembly:
This petition of the undersigned shows:
THAT the undersigned feel that Yukon’s majoritarian (first-past-the-post) electoral system is out-dated. Voters have to worry about ‘wasted votes’ and feel pressured to vote strategically;
THAT the undersigned believe that the first-past-the-post electoral system has the tendency to create false-majority governments. The undersigned advocate for a more consensus based electoral system; an electoral system that encourages inclusion, and cooperation in politics;
THAT the undersigned demand to be governed by a fairly elected Legislature where the share of seats held by each political party closely reflects the popular vote;
THAT the need for electoral reform is urgent
THEREFORE, the undersigned ask the Yukon Legislative Assembly to recognize the will of the undersigned, and in doing so to establish a citizen’s commission to study in depth our current electoral system, alongside alternative electoral systems; and after having studied the question of electoral reform in Yukon, this citizen’s commission shall make recommendations to the Yukon Legislative Assembly.
THAT if a recommendation of the citizen’s commission is to reform Yukon’s electoral system, the question of electoral reform in Yukon shall be put to a referendum in the shortest reasonable time possible.
