Eliminate Crime in Newark (Ironbound)

Dear Sirs:
As we speak on November 1, 2005, there is a mugging, robbery and/or carjacking occuring in our neighborhood. The East Ward (Ironbound/Downneck) area has become a festering place for criminal and gang activity. Residents are being subjected to unwarranted crimes involving guns and multiple assailants. Automobiles and buildings are scrawn with gang symbols clearly making territorial stances. And yet, the only concerns we hear about in our local newspapers are centered around the planning process and budgets for a new arena.
As residents of this area, we are fed up with the increase in crime, lack of police presence and lack of recognition that our neighborhood has received. Our children are at risk due to these crimes and the negative role models they witness each day. The residents have the inherent right to unmitigated protection by our City and therefore, we the undersigned are petitioning for the following:
1. More police presence in the Ironbound/Downneck area.
2. More vigilant monitoring of gang activity and the reduction of same.
3. That our local Councilman take a stronger stance to protect and monitor
this neighborhood at full descretion.
4. That residents be informed of these incidents and advised of measures
being taken to eliminate them.
5. Ultimately, that the streets become safer for everyone living and/or
visiting this thriving neighborhood.
We request this for our community, our neighborhood, our families and friends, our children, and for the safety of the men and women who serve in the City of Newark.

I would also like to see a crackdown on panhandlers at the train station and surrounding areas, solicitors at the high-end restaurants, littering of our streets, and a return of the city trashcans, which may help cut down on the littering!

I grew up in the Ironbound but moved out 15 years ago. My mother still lives there and my son's babysitter is there, therefore I go there everyday. I am so disappointed with the cops in Newark, all I see is them giving out tickets at the end of each month

This is ridiculous! Something needs to be done and now! Certain political figures that sit at home safe and sound with their bodyguards outside their door DON'T realize that real work actually means GETTING UP as opposed to watching your city rot!
