FCI Presa Canario recognition

We, the undersigned individuals and kennels, hereby petition the Fйdйration Cynologique Internationale (FCI) to revoke its recognition of the "Dogo Canario" ,Standard # 346, recognized provisionally June 3rd, 2001 and recognize the breed as the "Presa Canario" as it is already recognized by the Spanish Law, Real Decreto 1557/2005.We also ask that the FCI recognizes the breed with the standard indicated by the Spanish Law ( Real Decreto 558/2001) in which are present the traditional coat colors and maximum weight and height. Since the FCI recognition of this Canarian breed in 2001 by the FCI there have been endless strifes between breeders and enthusiasts because some took part of the newly recognized "Dogo Canario" breed and while others stayed away from this recognition to safeguard the traditional name and standard of the breed. The name "Dogo Canario " has no place in the history of the breed and was absolutely unknown prior to 2001. The FCI recognition of the " Presa Canario" as the "Dogo Canario" has caused much confusion to those that approach the breed. They quickly become aware of the strife between enthusiasts and breeders regarding this issue.This disagreement has already had important genetic consequences on current stock. The breed is recognized as the "Presa Canario by the UKC and the AKC in the United States these are two of the largest canine registries in the world. If the FCI won't accept our request, the majority of the community will continue to protect the traditional name and standard of the breed and continue to register our dogs as "Presa Canario using alternative registries like the FCE, UKC, AKC, etc, staying outside the FCI. We are aware this will not end the strife, however, we will not abandon the traditional name or standard. Furthermore, we will notify the spanish Government (Ministerio de Politica Agricultura y Alimentacion- M.A.P.A) to inform them that the FCI and the Real Sociedad Canina de Espaсa (RSCE) do not recognize our breed with the name and the breed standard indicated by the Spanish law (Real Decreto1557/20050), and to ask their collaboration to solve the problem. At the same time, we will notify the RSCE to inform them of our initiative.Finally, we want to safeguard the functional aspect of the breed, that has always been let alone in comparison of the world of the beauty competitions: we think that in order to better the breed it would be necessary to adopt some measures against hip displasia and to do temperament tests. It must never be forgotten that the Presa Canario was originally bred for being a functional dog and so it must be passed on to our posterity in its entirety and completely whole.

Nosotros, los abajo firmantes personas y criadores, pedimos a la Fйdйration Cynologique Internationale (FCI) revocar el reconocimiento de la raza "Dogo Canario", Estбndar n.346, reconocido provisionalmente el 3 de Junio 2001, y de reconocer la raza como "Presa Canario", asм como es reconocido por la Ley de Espaсa (Real Decreto 1557/2005). Pedimos tambiйn que la FCI reconozca la raza con el patrуn racial establecido por la Ley Espaсola (Real Decreto 558/2001), en el cual son presentes las capas tradicionales y medidas mбximas de peso y altura. Desde el reconocimiento de la FCI de esta raza originaria de Canarias, hubo variadas polйmicas y disputas entre criadores o aficionados, por la razуn que algunos tomaron las partes de la nueva raza "Dogo Canario" mientras que otros se quedaron lejos de este reconocimiento con el fin de tutelar el nombre y el patrуn racial tradicional. El nombre "Dogo Canario" no tiene algъn lugar en la historia de la raza y era absolutamente desconocido antes del 2001. El reconocimiento de la FCI del Presa Canario como "Dogo Canario" ha causado mucha confusiуn a las personas que se acercan a la raza, que pronto se dan cuenta de las continuas disputas entre los aficionados y entre los criadores. Este desacuerdo ya estб provocando consecuencias genйticas a la poblaciуn de perros. La raza es reconocida como "Presa Canario" en los Estados Unidos, por el American Kennel Club (AKC) y por el United Kennel Club (UKC) que son dos de los mбs grandes registros de perros en el mundo. En el caso que la FCI no aceptase nuestra peticiуn, la mayorнa de la comunidad del Presa Canario seguirб protegiendo el nombre y las caracterнsticas tradicionales de la raza, continuando en inscribir los perros con registros alternativos como los del UKC, AKC, FCE, etc., quedando afuera de la FCI. Sabemos bien que esto no va a resolver las disputas y las polйmicas, pero en ningъn momento abandonaremos el nombre tradicional o el patrуn racial. Ademбs, enviaremos una carta al gobierno de Espaсa (Ministerio de Polнtica, Agricultura y Alimentaciуn - M.A.P.A.), y una al Gobierno de Canarias, para informarlos que la FCI y la Real Sociedad Canina de Espaсa no reconocen nuestra raza con el nombre y el patrуn determinados por la misma ley espaсola (Real Decreto 1557/2005), y pediremos a ellos que colaboren con nosotros para resolver el problema. De la misma manera, enviaremos una carta a la RSCE para informarla de nuestra iniciativa. En fin, es nuestra intenciуn defender el aspecto funcional de la raza, que siempre ha sido dejado de lado con respecto al mundo de las competencias de belleza: pensamos que para mejorar la raza se tendrнan que adoptar serias medidas en contra de la displasia de cadera, y hacer pruebas de carбcter. No hay que olvidar en ningъn momento que el Presa Canario ha sido originalmente criado por ser un perro funcional y tal tiene que llegar a la posteridad.
