Among other things, Bakshi proved that animation should not be limited by its content. Fritz the Cat and Heavy Traffic were among the first animated features released in America with an X rating, Fritz the Cat being the first X-rated animated feature film. These historical films paved the way for today's modern adult animations, such as The Simpsons, and they still have a strong cult following because of their unique approach at storytelling, filmmaking, and animation.
The current "bare-bones" DVD releases of these films were supremely disappointing to us Ralph Bakshi fans. These films deserve a lot better. Special features should include audio commentaries by Ralph Bakshi and any additional footage, or promotional material that can be found. Heavy Traffic should also be presented in its original 1.66:1 widescreen aspect ratio and enhanced for 16X9 television screens.
