Shirley Bassey on Philips: Box Set
We, the fans of Dame Shirley Bassey would like to see a CD box set of her work for the Philips label, 1956-1959, as outlined below.
o There are a number of poor quality bootleg CDs floating around which have these tracks. Instead, remastering the original (mono) tracks would be better. Moreover, the quality of tracks on the one available Philips recordings CD, "The Magic of" on Spectrum is lacking to say the least. Please give her early work the treatment it deserves.
o There are at least 12 tracks commercially released in the 1950s that aren't available on CD yet.
o With the recent 50th Anniversary celebrating the Dame's half a century in showbiz, there is renewed interest in her. What better way to continue with this than to celebrate her early musical career?
o The original LPs should appear on CD, with original artwork hopefully. Several tracks from "Born To Sing The Blues" haven't been on CD and from "The Bewitching Miss Bassey", "The Wall" hasn't been on CD.
o The "Live at Cafй de Paris" EP has not appeared on CD at all. This series of live dates was one of the turning points in Shirley's early career.
o Any other live performances could be compiled for example, Shirley at the Ford Show in Australia.
o A "singles collection" CD would be good as well. Some of these haven't been on CD at all, whilst others are hard to find on CD. B-sides should also be released.
o Hidden in the vaults there are quite possibly tracks that never saw the light of day and need preserving.
o Alternate takes of her songs could also be included.
o Extensive sleeve notes please with a discography covering her time with the label, and full track annotation detailing recording dates and details.
o Overall, Dame Shirley Bassey is probably Britain's biggest female singer of all time. Yet her early recordings have not been treated at all well by the company who owns them. Many lesser artists have boxsets (indeed, Shirley already has one covering the EMI/UA years).
