The more fragile among us are dying because the air we breathe is now poisonous. The smog crisis has reached life threatening proportions in Malaysia and Indonesia.
Do we believe that the governments of Malaysia and Indonesia are addressing the smog crisis responsibly, with the lives of the millions of people in these countries at stake?
No. Because the haze crisis has had a history of over 20 years, and each time it gets worse. The Group on Trans-boundary Pollution 1990, the National Committee on Haze 1991, the Air Pollution Task Force 1993, the Haze Action Plan 1997, Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities have all been anything but effective in preventing the haze. Above all Indonesia has yet to ratify the ASEAN Agreement on Trans-boundary Haze Pollution.
Satellite images have pinpointed precise locations of plantations which are using the slash and burn method of clearing the the Indonesian jungle, plus illegal logging hotspots.
Yet these criminals are allowed to cause the smog over and over again. Why is that so? Is the situation that helpless?
We believe Malaysia can help put an end to this smog crisis by addressing the root causes.
1. We hear reports that there are 24 Malaysian timber companies operating in Indonesia. We want the government to stop protecting those who are responsible. They should not be allowed to profit at the expense of the rakyats lives and the billions of ringgit in economic losses to the nation, over and over again.
2. Illegal logging is also causing the fires. Our concern is that the Malaysian government may not be vigilant in its enforcement on this side and thus the rampant illegal logging in Indonesia continues.
If this is true, the Malaysian government must take drastic measures to stamp out this highly damaging perception in the international arena which has led to boycotts of Malaysian goods and tourism.
3. Malaysia should stop the diplomatic approach if the Indonesian government still stalls in accepting our offer to help put out the fire. This grave situation affects our nation's welfare. Our health is under attack and we have a sovereign right to respond.
We want concrete accountable action immediately.
We want the government of Malaysia to stop those responsible from continuing to trample upon the people's right to clean air.
