Illinois Global Warming Legislation

Dear State Representative:

On September 27, 2006, California signed into law its historic Global Warming Solutions Act. The bill, AB 32, calls for a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to match the 1990 output by 2012. AB 32 also allows for the California Air Resources Board to create and enforce regulations that will achieve this goal.

We, the citizens of Illinois, believe that global warming is one of the most pressing issues facing us today. In an age where we daily hear of melting ice caps, rising sea levels, weather catastrophes caused by climate change, and the threat facing our survival as a human race, we are saddened by the continuing lack of interest shown by our state and federal governments in fighting this issue.

California has taken a significant step. The fear, however, is caused by the fact that even though it is the worlds twelfth largest contributor to global warming, its actions will be negated if other states in our great Union do not take significant steps. Even though the current administration in Washington D.C. has shown contempt for global solutions such as the Kyoto treaty, we trust that our state will aid us in our quest to make the future world a livable one for our children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and beyond.

We therefore urge the state of Illinois to take similar actions. We advocate a reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions to match 1990 levels by 2020, and the creation of an air quality board to oversee these regulations. Even though the Governor recently passed legislation, the bill omitted restrictions on the two biggest contributors to global warming, private vehicles and coal-powered plants.

Our world cannot wait any longer. Please perform your duty in representing the interests of maintaining the future of our families.
