We, the undersigned members of the University of Pennsylvania community, hereby support the selection of Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations, as the 2005 commencement speaker. By extending interventions in humanitarian and peacekeeping missions, earning unprecendented international support for a second term and receiving the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize, Kofi Annan embodies the virtues that the University of Pennsylvania advocates. Capping a forty three year career in the United Nations as a reformer of bureaucracy and champion of human rights, Kofi Annan sets an admirable example for the leaders of tomorrow.
Having himself been absolved by U.S. appointed investigator Paul Vockler of any wrongdoing in the Iraq Oil for Food Program, Mr. Annan supports further inquiry of the situation. Furthermore, due to his dedication to furthering the cause of human rights, Mr. Annan has taken action to prevent such atrocities as those committed in the Congo. However, just as we cannot hold world leaders directly accountable for the criminal actions of individual subordinates, the Secretary General cannot be blamed for the aforementioned incident.
The signatories of this letter support further student representation in the speaker selection process. It is the not the intent of this petition to exacerbate the polarization on campus; rather, to promote a positive spirit by supporting the selection of Kofi Annan as the 2005 commencement speaker.
