As people enamoured of both J.R.R. Tolkiens works of literature and the quite decent films adapted from the book The Lord of the Rings it is no surprise that we are keenly interested in the creation of an almost inevitable Hobbit movie. The fact that large corporate entities posing as movie studios are in disagreement about how to make this film is quite understandable considering the veritable boatload of money to be made. Sadly involved in all this, now some years from his work on the Trilogy, is Peter Jackson who has recently made comments that gave fans of Tolkien reason to have grave doubts.
His dismissive remarks about the fact that the Hobbit is a simple kids story seems to indicate that he both has little interest in making a childrens movie and that these types of stories lack the sophistication he is seeking to bring to the motion picture audiences of the world.
It seems that Mr. Jackson has begun to acquire a certain hubris about the movie making business if he is a better judge of what makes a good movie. Quite simply, what makes a good movie is a good story, well told.
The Hobbit is one of the most popular childrens stories in the world and as such doesnt need Mr. Jacksons assistance in making it appealing to an international audience. It has achieved that distinction quite on its own without his help.
Given these considerations I feel that it behooves us as fans to strongly suggest that New Line and MGM thank Mr. Jackson for his contribution to the totality of Tolkien related Media and move on to another director. One who understands that the story The Hobbit is first and foremost a classic childrens tale that needs to capture the sense of wonder and humour and plain adventure of the text to successfully bring it to the screen. Do not make a Lord of the Rings retread, but a fresh, joyful fairy tale that children of all ages can enjoy.
