We request that the Portland Public School Board support the Marshall communitys plan for keeping the small schools open, but with added comprehensive options on the Marshall Campus to strengthen equity, interest and attendance for all students. Support is extremely marginal for a possible focus option that would only allow 400 of our current 1,600 neighborhood students to attend. If this focus option is to be pursued, the Marshall community requests that this school is housed at a nearby school facility and not on Marshalls campus.
We strongly believe that PPS must improve the high school system to increase graduation rates, close the achievement gap, inspire and engage all students and ensure all students are prepared for success at the next level.
We believe in neighborhood schools and believe that all children should attend the schools closest to their homes.
We firmly believe that a successful school system depends upon community involvement fostered by neighborhood schools. By the same token, a successful community depends upon a successful school system. Investment in ones future relies on the education, support and resources of ones community and by eliminating that basic accessibility and right, PPS will eliminate a vital piece of our neighborhoods stability, growth and future.
Finally, we deserve the same opportunities and resources that other schools have AND we expect PPS to follow their own nondiscrimination policy:
Portland Public Schools recognizes the diversity and worth of all individuals and groups and their roles in society. It is the policy of the Portland Public School Board that there will be no discrimination or harassment of individuals or groups on the grounds of age, color, creed, disability, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sex or sexual orientation in any educational programs, activities or employment.
