We believe that "Kyleigh's Law" has gone a step too far with basic rights. The law states that any driver in New Jersey under the age of 21 years old has the rights of a basic provisional license (If you are under 21, passengers must be from your household. Only one additional person from outside your household is allowed; No driving between 12:01 a.m. and 5 a.m. )

New Jersey became the first state to adopt a measure requiring those younger than 21 without full-privilege licenses to display a decal on their vehicle identifying them as new drivers. The intent is to make young drivers more easily identifiable to law enforcement. Also, instead of doing 6 hours of driving school for students, you now have to do 60. Now thats A LOT of money!

"Kyleigh's Law" was named after 16-year-old Kyleigh D'Alessio of Morris County, who was killed in a car accident involving a teen driver who also died.

"It's a shame that in New Jersey, the only thing you can do at 18 is go to jail, and die for your country, and now you can't even drive past midnight until you're 21 years old." says a local NJ teacher.

In a Gloucester County Times article on April 18, 2009 in Cheers and Jeers, stating "Letter writers have said this will invite trouble, especially for any young female driver who is returning to her car in darkness."

Who else says this? A local New Jersey lawyer, whom is suing. Attorney Gregg D. Trautmann of Rockaway called the law ridiculous and unconstitutional. Trautmann claims in his suit, filed April 17, "that the decals would serve as magnets for police to pull over young people and would let others, including sex offenders, easily identify and victimize teens."

The biggest problem in NJ is NOT the age of the drivers. It's the parents who are setting poor examples of safe driving. Why should a kid be expected to exhibit safe driving when Mommy & Daddy are speeding, driving aggressively, and talking on the cell phone (even texting) while their little darlings are in the passenger seat.

NJ does NOT need stricter licensing requirements. We need enforcement of the ones already in place, and stricter enforcement of ALL of the driving laws for ALL of the drivers. When someone messes up & survives, the punishment should be severe, both monetary & loss of license.

We are very sympathetic of the D'Alessio family, and do not mean to offend any.
