We, the undersigned Muslim women would like to have the benefit of Islamic Civil law under the proposed Sharia option in Ontario. We fully comprehend the implications of this option for our rights as Muslim women and view it as a welcome option. We also understand that if any disputes arise as a result of using the Sharia law for arbitration, the Ontario/Canadian laws will prevail. The few paranoid and misinformed voices opposing this option are unfairly hijacking the rights of Muslim women who have been empowered by Islam 1400 years ago. Sharia law would give Muslim women the benefits of the religious option similar to what is currently available for other religious groups, such as Jewish and Ismaili minorities. It is this religious freedom that brings respect to Canada internationally and we, the undersigned strongly support upholding this freedom.
