Open Cemetery Gates at Woodlawn Garden of Memories

Woodlawn Garden of Memories Cemetery in Houston, TX has had access from Old Katy Road and more recently Interstate 10W, known as the Katy Freeway, for over 75 years. This access preceded the freeway and the railroad, which has since been demolished. In January of 2005, the contractors for the expansion of the Katy Freeway informed the executive offices of Woodlawn that they would need to close the Katy Freeway entrance for a period of approximately three (3) months. The entrance has been closed for over a year and TXDot has only recently informed Woodlawn that it is not their intention to ever reopen the access.
The cemetery does have an additional entrance at 1101 Antoine Drive, which is also the location of Woodlawn Funeral Home. This entrance also serves as the access for Beth Israel Cemetery, a facility of Congregation Beth Israel. Woodlawn Funeral Home serves approximately 300 families each year and Woodlawn cemetery makes just fewer than 500 interments each year. In the case of a large service, either at Woodlawn or at Beth Israel, the traffic congestion for entering or leaving the cemetery property creates a problem to all attendees and/or visitors.
The management of Woodlawn is also concerned that there is only one entrance for emergency vehicles. If there were an accident on Antoine Drive, access for ambulances, police and fire trucks could be blocked for hours.
Therefore, we, the undersigned, ask that you do whatever is necessary to assure that this situation be resolved in favor of access for Woodlawn Cemetery.
