On November 29 the overwhelming majority of the world's nations voted at the United Nations to recognize that Palestine and Palestinian people deserve the status of statehood. Of 188 nations there were only 9 who voted against this motion. Canada was one of them.
The truth is, this does not reflect how most Canadians feel. The majority of Canadians are shocked and ashamed.
For several years we have been misrepresented by a government who has run roughshod over our democracy. They have never represented a majority, but they have consistently acted against the will of the people. They represent a minority that has seized power through fraudelent methods and have consistently acted against the traditions of Canadian political culture of which so many of us are proud. This is just one example of how the Harper government has angered and shamed Canadians. This is our struggle and we will overcome.
But for now we just want to say this to the Palestinian people.
Congratulations on a well-deserved victory. We are sorry that our government has been so unkind to you. They do not represent us. We are proud to be Canadian and we support you and a peaceful, two-state resolution to the conflict in your region. Our hearts are with you.
