The Canada Geese colony are peaceful residents of Lanes flat, Pauatahanui and are a beautiful aspect of the Porirua Harbour.
A cull has been lobbied by Forest and Bird with the support of a Greater Wellington Regional Councillor for the slaughter of the Geese colony which has at most 70 Geese and Goslings in total. The local community have not been consulted on the plan to eradicate the Geese colony of Lanes Flat. The plan to kill the geese is based on the view points of two individuals which are not supported by any scientific research.
The cull has been scheduled for January due to it being the Geese's moulting season. During this time the birds will be unable to fly or defend their Goslings in the event of an attack. Shooting cannot guarantee 100% accuracy, a number of injured and suffering birds is unavoidable and rounding up flightless birds and taking them away to kill is extremely stressful and cruel for those birds awaiting their death sentence.
The land does not belong to the council, it belongs to the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA). The land is currently vacant and within the next few years will be a construction site for Transmission Gully. The geese will not stay there – they will look for a new place. Canada Geese are defined as unprotected, meaning they can only be killed if the land owner agrees, so the final decision lies in the hands of the NZTA.
We ask not only the local community, but anyone who is against the unnecessary and inhumane cull to act now and be a voice for the voiceless.
Please sign our petition and spread the word - it is also encouraged to write your letters or email of concern to NZTA, The Greater Wellington Regional Council and Forest and Bird.
