We the undersigned support the induction of Paul Henderson into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Henderson scored the most famous goal in Canadian hockey history in Game Eight of the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the USSR. He also tallied the winning goals in games six and seven and finished the series with seven goals and three assists. Henderson enjoyed a fine NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs, scoring 236 goals and assisting on 242 others before moving on to the WHA's Birmingham franchise where he added 140 goals and 143 assists to his resume.
But cold statistics alone do not begin to tell the Paul Henderson story. His winning goal in 1972 transcended hockey and has become an iconic moment in Canadian history. Given the context of the time, with the world was in the midst of the Cold War, it became symbolic of Canada's never-say-die spirit in the face of adversity. Within Canada, it succeeded in breaking down barriers of regionalism, cultural and linguistic differences, and geography, and brought us together as Canadians.
With the 40th anniversary of the Summit Series fast approaching, the induction of Paul Henderson into the Hockey Hall of Fame will send the message that hockey is more than a game of numbers - it is a game of passion, pride, desire and heart. No hockey player better exemplifies these traits and qualities than Paul Henderson.
He is a humble ambassador for the game he loves, A game that he believes should always be played with honor and with respect for fellow players.
Paul Henderson is entirely deserving of a place in hockey's pantheon of greats.
