Racism at San Francisco State University

On November 1, 2004, it is known that a dispute between the College Republicans and a small group of women has taken place. Members of the College Republicans were tabling in the main quad of San Francisco State University and after a political debate with a few Middle Eastern and Afghani women had escalated, the members began to verbalize personal racist attacks against the women. However heated the confrontation was, racial slurs are always disrespectful. The acts of the College Republicans members constituted evident hate speech.
As San Francisco State University President Robert Corrigan wrote in his message to his campus colleagues on April 12, 2002, "Hate speech is not free speech... None are protected unless all are protected. We remain wholly committed to maintaining this campus as a place where all feel safe and supported."
The signatories of this petition would agree with the president's sentiment and it is their will to express a deep outrage concerning the offensive acts that have gone formally unrecognized. Further, they would like to let it be known that racist behavior is not to be endured in this community.
Further, we demand that there be no punitive action against these four women or any organization they belong to as they are victims of racism on this campus.
