Karim Amer is an Egyptian man and former student of al-Azhar University currently serving time in Borg Al-Arab Prison in Alexandria for making dissentient statements against Islam and his government on his blog. He was originally held by the Egyptian authorities in October 2005 and was sentenced in 22 February 2007 to four years of prison time. One year has already passed since his sentencing and in that time period he has complained of being tortured in the prison where he is being held and has been denied by authorities the ability to file a complaint of his treatment. Amnesty International has declared him to be a prisoner of conscience and is demanding his immediate release. Karim Amers rights as a human being have been severely violated and it is imperative that he be acquitted of his sentencing as soon as possible.
