We are writing in regard to the college's decision to retire Robert Bontempo, our golf coach, at the end of this year. Coach Bontempo is an amazing teacher, and we have all learned much from him from his wonderful teaching, his patience and encouraging words as well as his good humor. These are the very things that have made taking golf lessons at Mount Holyoke a joy and an unforgettable experience. Coach Bontempo goes above and beyond the duties of his job in giving us extra practice sessions, individual advice, and even soda on a hot day. He exemplifies all the qualities that make Mount Holyoke such a great institution; indeed, he IS a Mount Holyoke institution, a tradition that future students here should not miss out on.

Coach Bontempo expressed his desire to retire in 2010, after teaching here for 40 years since 1970. We feel that it not an unreasonable request that he retire in his own terms, and not be forced to leave at the end of this year. His love and pride in the the Mount Holyoke Lyons, his passion for the game and our great golf course, the Orchards, is strongly shown in every class and we have all been affected by his enthusiasm.

We feel very strongly that this is a mistake to let him go, and we ask that you honor his request to stay on, just as he has honored this college with his service for all these years. Our golf classes and the Orchards would not be the same without him.
