Sand Instead of Salt in the Beaches

STOP THE USE OF SALT FOR MELTING ICE IN THE TORONTO BEACHES

If you live in Toronto, you've seen the salt coating the streets and sidewalks this winter. It ruins our boots and our pants, it rusts our cars, it wrecks our hardwood floors. But most importantly, it kills grass and plants come the spring and wedges into dogs paws causing them immense pain.

The Beaches in Toronto is a very dog friendly neighbourhood. Everywhere you look, there are people with dogs of all shapes and sizes. Yet every winter, the streets are covered with layer upon layer of road salt. Dogs hate wearing boots, but if you don't force your dog to wear them, you'll spend your winter watching your poor dog limp, lick their cracked paws, you'll have to pull huge pieces of salt out of their paws or soak their feet in warm water after every walk, you may even end up avoiding long walks all together.

There are other options! While sand won't really melt ice, it will create effective traction on the streets and sidewalks to avoid slipping and car wrecks. It may be a little messy in the spring, but during the winter, it won't ruin our clothing, our cars, our floors, or our pets poor little feet. It also won't kill our gardens once all the snow melts.

Let's see if we can get enough signatures to make the City of Toronto hear our plea and change their ice melting methods!
