Save Our Plastic Model Cars

We, the people of the plastic (styrene) model car world are saddened to see our hobby all but ignored as die-cast models/replicas takeover the shelf space which was once home to our precious plastic model cars. We are tired of having to hunt down the latest models as they disappear from store shelves only to be replaced with mindless prepainted, prebuilt diecast replicas which only pretend to represent the cars which we have been building for years.

Many of us have been in the hobby for more than 40 years whereas many of us would like to continue the hobby for forty more, but that is becoming increasingly difficult with the blatant disregard that companies such as AMT/Ertl are showing our hobby. By cutting down production and halting development of new plastic model kits. Only to then replace them with diecast cars which do nothing but rest on the shelves and gather dust as the supply for these greatly out weighs the demand.

We realize that there are many companies now producing resin kits, but these small producers cannot supply our entire hobby base, nor can the majority of builders afford the high price of resin kits. And then there are the many plastic model builders whos skills quite frankly are not up to the demand that resin puts on them.

We realize that new tools for plastic models are expensive, but we think that they are worth it, there are also many old tools laying about that can be restored and/or freshened up.

At toy conventions in the last year, more than one representative of one of the three above named companies have been quoted to say that Plastic Models are Dead. Well we are here to say that the hobby is not only alive and well with the builders but we would love to see a resurgence from those who produce and/or have produced our plastic model kits in the past.
