Last year the Papadopolous family worked out a new, 15 year lease with its landlord, the Port of San Francisco. Things were going smoothly for the two parties to agree on a new lease until this past May, when the family received notice that its rent was being increased to five times what it is currently paying and twice the rent that was negotiated last year. The family will have no choice but to shut down unless the Port of San Francisco agrees to the lease that was agreed upon last year.
Read about it here in the San Francisco Chronicle: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/08/27/BALEROVOB.DTL&hw=Matier+Ross&sn=001&sc=1000.
This is a clear case of a governing San Francisco body unfairly putting the screws to a small, family run business in the hopes of clearing them out to make way for future development. For a city government entity whose mission is to "support and enhance an environment where small businesses can succeed and flourish", this is nothing short of a travesty. You can help stop the Port of SFs reprehensible actions by signing this petition to let the Papadopolous family and the Java House stay.
The Papadopolous family thanks you for your support.
