Save the Stray Dogs of Mumbai

We are shocked and appalled to read in the newspapers that you personally favour the killing of stray dogs, and that you are planning to ask the Supreme Court to legalise this inhuman practice. We are a group of concerned citizens, including children, who strongly protest this move. Killing these dogs has never solved the problem - the only humane and ultimately successful method is sterilization. We strongly appeal to the Municipal Commissioner and the BMC to drop their proposal to kill stray dogs. Instead, they should work together with animal welfare organisations to step up the pace of sterilization of strays so that the stray dog population is controlled in a humane and permanent fashion.

Please remember that it was Gandhiji who said that the measure of a country's civilisation is the way it treats its animals. Is it civilized to kill defenceless stray dogs?
