Saving Trees at Capilano University

We are asking for your show of support in saving the last coastal redwood on our campus. A new parking lot is in the plans for the area by the former Film Studies building (the P Building). Unfortunately, the only remaining coastal redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens) on campus stands in that vicinity – currently amidst the trailers and containers set up for construction of the new Nat and Flora Bosa Centre for Film and Animation. The plan is to have the tree cut down. This tree has tremendous historical significance to our campus. It has already been relocated once on campus with great care and at great expense. It is now too mature to be relocated. Over the years it has offered countless teaching experiences and has wide-ranging ecological value. Another small stand of sorrel trees (Oxydendrum Arboreum) is also scheduled for clearing. These trees represent the only species in their genus and are one of very few that are native to North America. They are considered rare and significant in this area and are not found elsewhere in the Vancouver region. We are fortunate to be able to learn and work within this temperature rain forest region and wildlife corridor. Many people on campus believe that it is shortsighted to jeopardize the vitality and biological diversity of this area. In the past, trees and shrubs have been cleared from our campus with little forewarning or consultation. Let’s put an end to that practice.

2) rallying efforts towards a more sustainable, ecological and creative solution for the planning of the parking lot that includes saving these trees.
