Say No to Chickens in Ottawa

To: Ottawa City Council
We, the undersigned citizens of Ottawa, believe that farm animals including chickens, ducks, geese and other poultry, belong on farms not in the backyards of residential properties within the city limits. We strongly urge you to retain the existing bylaw because raising farm animals, including chickens, on residential properties within the city:
-- presents public health and hygiene concerns for urban residents;
-- presents potential animal health risks for farm raised animals and for Ottawas farmers;
-- attracts pests such as rats, raccoons, coyotes, etc
-- creates friction amongst neighbours due to the presence noxious odors and noise;
-- limits the enjoyment of neighbours of their own backyards;
-- could result in new burdens, costs and challenges for the Ottawa Humane Society; and,
-- creates a new licensing and bylaw enforcement burden for the city which will not be covered by increased revenue.
Retaining the current bylaws respecting the raising of farm animals on residential lots is consistent with best practices in cities across Canada.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned Residents of the City of Ottawa
