Services for Children of Alcoholics and Substance Abusers

We are petitioning to create awareness for the lack of support services available for the children of alcoholics and substance-abusers (COA/SA) in Ontario.

These children are an at-risk population for diminished intellectual capacity and development, increased emotional problems, and a wide range of psychological and behavioral disorders.

Research also suggests that COA/SAs are at higher risk for dysfunctional behaviours in adulthood.

The current level of support and services for COA/SA in Ontario is limited and there are no political actions addressing the needs of this vulnerable population. There is a lack of Canadian research addressing this problem. Without research it is difficult to determine the particular needs of COA/SA, including how extensive those needs are and which interventions, on what scale, would best meet those needs.
