On April 14 2010, the South Park episode "200" was released and ended on a cliffhanger. One week later, the second part was released in the United States but heavily censored, not just swearing, but censoring the image of Muhammad, prophet of the Muslim faith, and even going as far as to censor every use of his name.
Muhammad has been used several times in South Park in the past, first in 2001 with the episode "Super Best Friends" where the image of Muhammad was shown for a short amount of time. The other cases were in "Cartoon Wars Parts 1 and 2" where the prophet is mentioned many times but the image is not shown.
The problem with showing Muhammad came in 2005 when a Danish newspaper editor released editorial cartoons entitled "Muhammads Ansigt", which showed Muhammad in satire. While it has always been controversial to show Muhammad in this way, it was only at this time where things became out of hand.
The episode "201" is supposed to be about protecting your right to free speech, yet the heavily censored cartoon contradicts this message. There are certain things that must remain censored, like the black box covering the prophet because it is part of the story, but his name and the speeches that appear at the end should not.
I hope that with this petition the company will not give in to terrorists and show the episode uncensored so that people can enjoy what South Park has always brought us: a satirical look at modern life.
