This namelist will be given to the Mayor of Bucharest in the spring of 2007. We are sure that international pressure is a good way of making Romania follow the EU legislations of animal laws.
Daisy Hope, Stockholm, Sweden
To Mr Adrian Videanu, Mayor of Bucharest,
We would like to congratulate you as the new Mayor of Bucharest and hope that you will administrate this important role and give your influence in the best ways for the city.
One thing that we are very sad about is the dog situation in the city of Bucharest. We would like to see a solution to the problem. According to our experience the very best way to reduce an overpopulation of dogs - we have seen that this method have worked well in the EU as well as in the rest of the world is programs for spaying and neutering.
We appeal to you to use you influence to make a better situation for Bucharest and for the dogs there. Please render possible a spay campaign and then - do not kill the neutered dogs of the streets. The only way to solve the problem in a long term is to start working on spaying and vaccination of the street dogs. We strongly advise you to look at the example of other Romanian towns and cities (in the Costanza and Bijor regions) which are already carrying out such programme with success.
Also, the dog catcher killing of the dogs as it is today is not compliable with animal laws of the EU. We are strongly against the situation as it is handled today. It is also an ineffective and very short sighted method of solving a complicated problem.
We are appealing to you to immediately start a neutering and spaying programme in collaboration with animal protection associations in Romania. If we do not see a result we will start making a campaign with other animal right organisations in the EU. We attach a name list of 50000 of people in Sweden protesting against the policies for the stray dogs of Bucharest.
We very much welcome the Romanian enter in the European Union and hope that you will live up to it as a modern and compassionate county. Please use you power to make a better situation for humans and dogs of Bucharest.
