This is one of the most critical times for Tibetan culture, religion and environment since the 1950 Chinese invasion. •Since 2011 almost 40 people have burnt themselves alive in protest of the Chinese Government’s inhumane policies in Tibet; this number has been increasing at an alarming rate. •Since 2008 undeclared martial law has been enforced with unprecedented military build-up in Tibetan regions. •As free trade partners with China, New Zealand has a responsibility to use our open partnership to end the cultural genocide and environmental devastation in Tibet. To prevent further loss of life and irreparable harm to the culture, religion and environment of Tibet: We the undersigned request the New Zealand government to initiate multilateral diplomatic action and immediately call on the Chinese government to: 1. Uphold their obligations to Tibetans as signatories of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. 2. Resume meaningful dialogue with representatives of the Tibetan people in exile regarding genuine Tibetan autonomy and their rights to self-determination. 3. Permanently cease the religious control regulations implemented in Tibet. 4. Stop the undeclared martial law in Tibet, release all political prisoners and cease its “patriotic re-education” campaign. 5. Allow international observers and media regular unrestricted access to Tibetan regions to evaluate the above conditions.
