We the Undersigned, a collection of students, faculty, and community
members, ask you to recognize the disparate opportunities, failing
school systems, debilitated facilities, and diminishing resources
which plague many under-represented Asian American communities. Under
the current UC admissions policy, the success of a handful of Asian
American ethnicities overshadows the plight of other groups. By
collecting more accurate data, The University of California can better
respond to the needs of our communities.
We ask for your support in
1) Enhancing the University of California's Admission policy to
include data collection on students of Bangladeshi, Cambodian, Hmong,
Indonesian, Laotian, Malaysian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Taiwanese, and
Thai backgrounds
2) Separating Pacific Islander into a new racial
category within admissions and
3) Providing financial support for
outreach projects that specifically target Asian American/ Pacific
Islander groups facing severe educational inequity.
By implementing these changes, the University of California can better
reflect the diversity of California's growing communities. We believe
that diversity is California's most unique strength and hope that the
Office of the President capitalizes on this opportunity to work
towards the University of California's stated goals of increasing the
intellectual development of all peoples.
