We Need An American Autobahn

Subject: An American Autobahn

As an American driver and citizen, I am at times quite envious of the German Autobahn. Our country currently has a 398.8 billion dollar defecit, with no certain end in sight. In addition, there are more than 17,000 alcohol related deaths each year. In order to help solve both of these apalling statistics, We The Undersigned propose that the U.S. Government take steps to implement an interstate autobahn, or unlimited-speed toll highway, with toll plazas every 30-40 miles to basically keep everyone in check and allow safe entry and exit from the highway. By doing this, we hope to accomplish:

a) A significant decrase in the number of alcohol-related vehicle fatalities by implementing a breathalyzer at each toll station. Any drivers who are found to have ANY alcohol in their blood will not be allowed on the highway and proper actions will be taken by local & state authorities. This should also increase the number of DUI/DWI arrests each year, thereby increasing revenue and decreasing defecit and getting drunk drivers off of our nations public roads.
b) A return to the heyday of the American highway, when the road trip was a chance for families to actually spend significant amounts of time with each other, bettering the strength of the American family unit. The increased number of interstate travelers will also increase tourism and revenue at the state level. Families traveling on our highways will also be safer due to the absolute lack of intoxicated drivers.
c) A love for the road, instilled in the hearts of everyone who sets four wheels on our highway and which is certainly shared by The Undersigned. This will increase general pride in our country and hopefully aid in a bit of stability in this post Sept.11th world.

The enormous responsibility of securing our nation's safety and bringing us out of debt rests in your hands. Too many Americans have seen sons and daughters, fathers and mothers killed by drunk drivers. Too many of us are fed up with the strongest nation in the world being more than $350 billion in debt. Lastly, too many Americans have lost their zest for life, and We believe that a safe, effective manner of interstate travel is called for.
