The South Korea v.s. Switzerland match(6/24/06) in the 2006 World Cup was a fraudulent game that clearly showed cases of poor ethics and incompetent judgement by the referee Horacio Elizondo. He awarded the Swiss team a goal in the 77th minute despite the fact that an offsides flag was raised by the assistant referee Rodolfo Otero. The reasoning in doing away with the offsides call was that the ball was put into the path of Alexander Frei after deflecting off Lee Ho's foot. According to the FIFA regulations, deflections DO NOT count as possession, so the pass to Frei was nothing short of offsides. Whether if the FIFA administration agrees with the claim on this controversial goal or not, this was a faulty motion on the part of the referees. Also, handling was never issued to the Swiss defender Patrick Mьller in the 42nd minute, who clearly touched the ball that was coming towards the Swiss goal from a corner kick and was inside the penalty area. The same misjudgement on handling occurred again by the Swiss 8 minutes into the second half. The referee was also in the way of the South Korean player Kim Nam Il and interfered by kicking the ball. The game consisted of a number of unprincipled calls by Elizondo and the confusion created from his judgement led to an eyesore of a game. The match was very unbalanced in terms of fairness of calls from the referee and this issue must be resolved. South Korea's national team should be compensated for this disadvantage served by Elizondo, either a fair game should take place between South Korea and Switzerland as reimbursement or Elizondo should be fired from refereeing internationally for the sport of soccer/football. Horacio Elizondo's brash decisions were fatal to the morale and play of the South Korean team and were big factors in the outcome of the game. His interferences and maladroit performance as a referee cannot just go without punishment.
Because of his substandard skills as an international referee, the South Korea v.s. Swiss match was a mix-matched jumble of pure confusion: it was not a properly officiated World Cup soccer game, but was more like hogwash thanks to the inferiority of Horacio Elizondo and his highly questionable ethics in refereeing an international soccer game.
