Yuri Honing, cancel Red Sea Jazz festival in Israel

Dutch musician Yuri Honing is scheduled to play at the Red Sea Jazz festival. in Eilat, Israel, on 17-18-29-1-2013. Dutch citizens, with the support of Israeli citizens, have launched this petition to ask Mr Honing to cancel his performance, in solidarity with the Palestinian civil society cultural boycott call. This call is aimed at Israeli government-sponsored events, whose aim is masking Israeli human rights violations by art and culture. The Portico Quartet [UK] have already cancelled their participation in the festival due to moral-political reasons, namely their opposition to Israel's ongoing human rights violations against the Palestinian people,

Dear Yuri Honing,

We are a group of Dutch and Israeli citizens, loving music and we have the utmost respect for your musical contributions to our world. However, we are quite shocked to learn of your upcoming performances on 18 and 19 of January 2013 at the Eilat Red Sea Jazzfestival in Israel. We would like to share our concerns with you, and urge you to reconsider your performance there.

We support the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israeli institutions until Israel complies with international law and universal principles of human-rights, in line with the Israeli organization Boycott! Supporting the Palestinian BDS Call from Within, [1] and The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.[2] As you may know, the Palestinian civil society call for BDS was issued in 2005 by over 170 Palestinian organizations. This world-wide boycott has been endorsed by numerous international figures, such as Bishop Desmond Tutu, and was endorsed by the African National Congress (ANC) last week.[3]

Many world-famous western musicians, artists and writers have answered the BDS call and have taken a stand against injustice, in solidarity with the oppressed: U2 , Stevie Wonder, Faithless, Massive Attack, writer Alice Walker, the late Gil Scott Heron, the Pixies, Gorillaz Sound System, Elvis Costello,Roger Waters and many more. We ask you to follow their example and cancel your planned performances in Israel.

Israel's attempts to mask systematic human-rights abuses and decades-long oppression against the Palestinians largely rely on its ability to maintain a progressive and democratic image in the eyes of the international community. Israel promotes itself as "the only Democracy in the Middle East". However, the Palestinian people are denied some of the most elementary freedoms: the freedom of movement [4],the freedom to access their stolen agricultural land and the freedom to protest without facing life threatening violence: When they demonstrate against the Israeli government, they face brutal treatment. Their relatives in the Gaza strip (44% of which are children under the age of 14) live under a brutal siege restricting the needed amount of food, medical supplies, and materials for construction [5].

Israel's apartheid policies are inherent even to the Red Sea Jazz festival: Palestinian fans of your music living in the West Bank, in a land governed by Israel, are under martial-law and will not be permitted to come to Eilat and enjoy your performance, and the same goes for Palestinians living in Gaza under Israeli siege.

The Red Sea Jazz festival, where you are scheduled to play, is sponsored and organized by the Israeli government, through its ministries of culture, sports and tourism, along with the municipality of Eilat. [www.redseajazzeilat.com/en/sponsors] This festival is part of the Israeli campaign to mask illegal acts of the state of Israel, by inviting well-known foreign artists as its guests, maintaining a façade of a “normal, democratic“ state. This (ab)use of art and culture to “launder” Israel's crimes for the international stage, has been stated publicly by Nissim Ben-Sheetrit of Israel’s Foreign Ministry “We see culture as a propaganda tool of the first rank, and I do not differentiate between propaganda and culture.” [6] Israel is not a democracy, but a apartheid state, as stated in the findings of the theRussel Tribunal on Palestine in  2011. [7]

We know you are a talented world-famous musician, and we are sure that people always enjoy your music. Nevertheless we urgently ask you to cancel the planned performances of the Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet in Eilat, in favour of a stand against injustice and violation of human rights! So did your colleagues, the Portico Quartet due to moral-political reasons.[8]  By canceling, you have an opportunity to stand with the oppressed. Please  endorse the non-violent struggle for human-rights and justice in Israel/Palestine. Please do not contribute to the normalization of daily apartheid policies!

Beste Yuri Honing,

Wij zijn een groep Nederlandse en Israëlische burgers die van muziek houden; we waarderen jouw artisticiteit en we wensen die alle ruimte toe, maar we zijn niet blij met deelname van het Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet aan het Red Sea Jazzfestival te Eilat, Israël op 18 en 19 januari 2013.

Wij steunen de mondiale boycot van Israël, die het doel heeft de Israëlische regering zover te brengen, dat het de universele mensenrechten en het internationaal recht naleeft? De vraag om ‘Boycot, Desinvestering en Sancties’(BDS) werd in 2005 vanuit meer dan 170 Palestijnse maatschappelijke organisaties als een oproep aan de wereld gedaan. Vanuit alle landen wordt nu deze oproep beantwoord door bekende instellingen, organisaties, kunstenaars , wetenschappers, schrijvers, filmmakers en musici. Kunstenaars van wereldfaam cancelden hun concerten in Israel  en ondersteunden daarmee de  (culturele) boycot:U2,  Stevie Wonder,  Faithless,  Massive Attack, schrijfster Alice Walker, wijlen Gil Scott Heron, de Pixies, Gorillaz Sound System, Elvis Costello, Roger Waters etc.

Wij briefschrijvers ondersteunen de BDS-actie , die net als in Zuid-Afrika langs geweldloze weg pressie kan uitoefenen op de Israëlische regering om zich eindelijk aan de internationale wetten te houden. Onze insteek is geheel in lijn met de Israëlische organisatie Boycot! Supporting the Palestinian BDS Call from Within [1] en The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israël. [2] De boycot van Israël wordt onderschreven door o.m. Bisschop Desmond Tutu en sinds vorige week ook door het African National Congress (ANC).[3]

Het lukt Israel nog steeds internationaal de schijn op te houden een gewone moderne democratie te zijn en het systematisch schenden van mensenrechten, de langdurige militaire onderdrukking van Palestijnen onder het tapijt te houden. Israel gaat er prat op de “enige Democratie in het Midden Oosten” te zijn. In werkelijkheid reikt de Israelische apartheid zover, dat die zelfs effect heeft op het Red Sea Jazz festival..: Jazzfans van de Westelijke Jordaanoever, door Israel geregeerd en gedomineerd land, vallen onder militaire wetgeving en mogen niet naar Eilat reizen om van jouw muziek te komen genieten. Datzelfde verbod geldt voor mensen uit Gaza, zij zullen evenmin naar jouw klanken kunnen komen luisteren.

De meest elementaire rechten worden aan Palestijnse burgers onthouden, een willekeurige greep: geen vrijheid van beweging of reizen[4]; geen vrijheid om op de hen ontstolen landbouwgrond te komen;geen vrijheidom te demonstreren zonder levensgevaarlijk geweld te riskeren: wie toch -vreedzaam- tegen het Israelische regime demonstreert kan hier op rekenen; Palestijnen in de Gazastrook ( waarvan 44% kinderen zijn onder de 14 jaar) ondergaan de snoeiharde Israelische bezetting, die zelfs restricties oplegt tav de hoeveelheden voedsel, bouwmaterialen en medicijnen die aangevoerd mogen worden. [5]

Het Red Sea Jazz Festival wordt betaald en georganiseerd door de Israëlische overheid met haar ministeries van cultuur, sport en tourisme in samenwerking met de gemeente Eilat (http://www.redseajazzeilat.com/en/sponsors/) De Israëlische regering voert al jaren een “witwas”-campagne om de illegale acties van de staat te verdoezelen voor de internationale gemeenschap door met een aantrekkelijk gezicht van Israel op de voorgrond te treden:met belangrijke kunst- en cultuur-evenementen en fantastische optredens.

Het Red Sea Jazz Festival is deel van deze campagne, die oa door  Nissim Ben-Sheetrit van het Israëlische Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken verwoord wordt: “Wij (het ministerie) zien cultuur als een propagandamiddel van de eerste orde en er bestaat voor mij geen verschil tussen propaganda en cultuur.” [5] Door topartiesten en internationale beroemdheden te gast uit te nodigen, kan Israël het imago internationaal in stand houden een ‘normale democratie’ te zijn. Israël is echter geen normale staat, het is een apartheidsstaat zoals het Russel Tribunaal heeft vastgesteld [6] en het onderhoudt eenmilitaire bezetting, die op dagelijkse basis mensenrechten schendt en internationale wetten overtreedt.

We denken dat een topmusicus als jij een fantastische tijd kan hebben in Eilat en daar graag gehoord zal worden. Dat gunnen we je van harte, maar in dit geval vragen we je dringend: Ga niet. Cancel de optredens van het Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet in Eilat.

Leen je naam en muziek niet aan een campagne voor het witwassen van  mensenrechtenschendingen, die op dagelijkse basis door blijven doorgaan; ga niet spelen voor normalisatie van een apartheidsregime, dat het internationale recht aan zijn laars lapt. Maar geef door te cancelen je steun aan de internationale culturele boycot- een geweldloze manier om Israel tot de orde te roepen. Door je optredens op het Red Sea Jazz festival “af te blazen”, maak  je een statement voor het respecteren van mensenrechten, voor solidariteit met onderdrukten en tegen onrecht in Israël/Palestina.

Je collega’s van het ‘Portico Quartet’ annuleerden reeds hun concerten op het Eilat-festival om moreel-politieke redenen.[8] We hopen dat jij je hierbij aansluit. Mocht je hierover nog vragen hebben dan zullen we die zeker graag beantwoorden.
