Against the Banning of Homosexual Literature/Ideas

We, the people of the United States, do formally request that President Bush, and all other political leaders (both in State, National, and Foreign legislatures) disregard the anti-homosexual ideas recently presented by Representative Gerald Allen R-Cottondale. Representative Allen has presented a bill, to be considered by the Alabama legislative session in 2005, which would ban all state funded material that portrayed homosexuality. This includes public libraries, public schools, state universities, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, and undoubtably it will affect others.

Such a bill would ban many library books such as The Color Purple, such plays as Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and A Chorus Line (Taylor). This would also forbid a teacher giving out class materials, or inviting a guest speaker into a classroom if they suggested that homosexuality is acceptable (Chandler). Recently, President Bush has been meeting with Representative Allen to discuss Allens ideas regarding banning literature and ideas that represent homosexuality in a positive light. We, the people, fear that if Representative Allens ideas are approved by the Alabama legislature, or if President Bush presents a bill to the national legislature that have the same ideals, that citizens, authors, teachers, playwrights, actors, actresses, and others will be unfairly oppressed if they support homosexuality as an acceptable lifestyle.

We fear that if such an oppression, and the intolerance it will breed, become mainstream in this country, it will lead to more hate crimes and violence, as it has in the past (Person, PBS Frontline). We fear that the young people of our culture will grow up with a warped perception of people who have chosen other lifestyles. We fear the loss of a large portion of our culture.

We, the people of the United States, do formally request that our opinions, as expressed in the above petition be considered by the President Bush, and the State, and National legislatures of the United States.
