Dear Mr. Robertson,
On the August 22, 2005 broadcast of "The 700 Club," you called for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. You said, in part, "You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war." You also said, "We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability. We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with." On the Wednesday edition, you claimed that you didn't necessarily want Chavez dead, but that there were other ways of "taking him out" such as kidnapping.
Regardless of what your intent was, either course would be uncivilized and illegal under American and international law. To even suggest that a head of state, no matter how onerous he might be, should be assassinated or kidnapped has no place in any sort of civilized discourse. Your remarks may have made us less safe.
The only responsible course for you is to apologize to President Chavez and the Venezuelan people.
