Dear Madams/Sirs:
Thousands of Iranians have been arrested and brutally tortured, from street protesters, to bystanders, professors, journalists, and to election campaign organizers for Mir Hussein Moussavi in the 2009 Presidential election of Iran. Many are now being forced to confess to having been foreign agents.
On July 4th, one of the most influential religious bodies in Iran, The Association of Researchers and Teachers of Qom, issued a statement denouncing the election and calling the government of Ahmadinejad illegitimate.
Democracies around the world have a duty, not simply to themselves, but to their strategic interests, to send a powerful message to hardliners in Iran that the brutal suppression of peaceful protests and the violation of human rights, carry a heavy price in international standing.
We Urge You to:
1- Refuse to recognize the legitimacy of Ahmadinejads government
2- Downgrade diplomatic and trade ties with The Islamic Republic of Iran
