Whereas the City of Saskatoon bylaws currently read that the keeping of backyard chickens is prohibited and
Whereas there is a global movement known as rural urbanism which embraces ideas such as introducing chickens to cities to diminish the urban/rural divide that exists. Some of the cities already allowing urban chickens are: Niagara Falls, ON ; Brampton, ON ; Guelph, ON ; Victoria, BC ; Surrey, BC ; Calgary, AB ; Vancouver, BC ; as well as 86 locations in the USA ; and
Whereas the city of Saskatoon already encourages such forward thinking ideas as: composting, recycling, collecting rainwater, community gardens, dedicated green spaces, using controlled grazing to eradicate noxious weeds, etc., as well as encouraging less use of pesticides and fertilizers.
We the undersigned invite Saskatoon City council to engage in conversation with interested individuals and groups to discuss a possible change to the bylaws regarding backyard chickens, which would potentially allow a pilot project to proceed with a limited number of participants along with appropriate regulations.
We encourage the participation of individuals to debate both sides of the issue.
