Belle Sherman Art and Music scheduling petition

The school district administration has proposed a plan for rotational scheduling that will significantly change our art and music programs. It is our understanding that under this new plan, Belle Sherman may share two art teachers and two music teachers with the other elementary schools. None of these teachers would call our school home. We are concerned that our school is being asked to shoulder a disproportionate burden, since six of the elementary schools would have at least an art or music teacher, or even both, who will be based at their school. We are also concerned that this fragmented art and music program would particularly affect our significant population of students who primarily speak a language other than English at home. We wonder whether there isn't some way to resolve the scheduling issues the district faces without requiring a rotational schedule for art and music teachers.

We the undersigned, ask for the following:

* That the proposed changes to the art, music, and PE schedule be fully communicated to our community.

* That the administration consider all possible scheduling scenarios that do not require a rotational schedule on the part of art and music teachers.

* That the administration respond to our concern that this rotational schedule is particularly ill suited to children who speak a language other than English as their primary language.

* That if a rotational schedule is a necessity, the administration consider a distribution of shared specialists that allows for each school to have at least one specialist for whom that school is their "home" school.
