Devon Says No To Regional Government

We, the undersigned, believe that the people of Devon do not want to be governed by an elected South West regional assembly. We want localised governance in Devon run exclusively for and by the people of Devon.
A South West regional assembly would result in the abolition of our local Councils as we know them. By eliminating the structures of local democracy, the regionalisation of England will result in the abolition of ancient shires.
We believe that a regional assembly will cost us all more not only through the costs of establishing and continuing to fund it but also in the tax raising powers it would be given.
We are, therefore, against any proposals for a South West regional assembly.
