Eliminate Peace Officer Status for TBTA Officers

I am a resident of the State of New York and strongly appose Senate Bill S1021 and Assembly Bill A1386 sponsored by Senator Maltese, Senator Marchi, and Member of Assembly Abbate, respectively. This Bill will change the CPL and grant Police Officer status to Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Authority Officers, and increase the burden on the tax payers to hire more toll collectors, since they seek to become police officers.
As Peace Officers, their powers to act are curtailed regularly. The tragedy of September 11, 2001 temporarily circumvented restrictions placed on these peace officers and now they seek full police status. Unfortunately the majority of the TBTA officers wouldn't be able to pass the tests to become police officers. Furthermore, the TBTA, under the control of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) already has their own police department, which has personnel assigned to the TBTA sites on a daily basis. The creation of a specific TBTA Police would simply create a greater expense for the people who use the TBTA crossings.
Finally, I would strongly support eliminating the TBTA from having peace officer status, and simply allow them to collect tolls and leave policing to the MTA Police.
Through this petition we strongly urge the Senate and Assembly to appose this bill and see that it never becomes New York State Law.
