On 11th October, 2007, six Greenpeace activists were arrested by the West Bengal police after they scaled a 250 meter long chimney of the Kolagahat Coal fired power plant near Kolkatta to hang a banner stating "Smoking Kills" in an attempt to raise awareness about how CO2 emissions from coal power plants cause climate change.
The activists have been detained under the atrocious West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order Act (1972), a non-bailable offence and for Criminal Trespass, which adds upto 10 years and 3 months of imprisonment. A harsh sentence you will agree, for a non-violent direct action to address one of the most urgent threat facing the planet.
We request you to immediately release the activists and take their concerns on board in planning the energy future for your state, that should be driven by energy efficiency and renewable energy at its core to ensure a sustainable future.
