Dear whom may it concern,
We students and or parents of the Pinellas County School District understand the need for a dress code. There are a few things about the new dress code which we do not agree would help improve the learning environment. Sandals or flip flops are worn by a vast majority of public school students. These are for some reason seen as a bad thing by the board and it is not seen as a distraction within the classroom by students. Myself and many other students understand the board's view of flip flops as beach attire and not dressed up enough for school but, this is just a style of dress as in a full gothic outfit would be. My question is, how is a kid wearing a polo shirt and shorts with flip flops more distracting than some one with outrageous make up and 3 foot long spikes in their hair and a cape.
The idea of school uniforms is being rejected by most students. This is due to the fact that students would like the freedom to choose how they dress. We understand the limitations we have due to it being a learning environment but to make everyone dress alike is an absurd way to try and reduce the distractions It will only hinder students developing individuality which is a critical part of becoming a successful adult.
The thought that most people have for the reason uniforms are instituted is to help bring up grades. The idea of rewards for grades is over-looked. Seeing how the point of the uniforms is to improve grades, why not have uniforms be dependent on the schools overall grades? This is an idea to give incentive to students and schools to achieve and not to punish them for the schools that do not do as well and the uniform practice will be more on an as needed basis. This is just one alternative and there are many different roads to go on with this.
