We, the Alumni of Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU) - Bangalore chapter, would like to express our heartiest gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor-BHU / Director, IT-BHU / Dir - HRD / AS - HRD / Secretary - HRD / Min - HRD / Honorable Prime Minister of India and everyone concerned especially, the institutes faculty members and students for their relentless efforts on the issue of granting IT-BHU the status of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), which have finally resulted into the announcement of the decision by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of HRD.
This issue is very close to our heart because since the last thirty six years, while the students have been admitted through IIT-JEE in this institute with the academia of international repute and the infrastructure equivalent to, if not better than the IITs, not being an IIT has cost us the professional branding/identification, required funding and the consequent opportunities.
The issue of granting the status of IIT has been raised several times in the past with no tangible outcome. With the in principle approval of the Cabinet and the recent announcement made by the Honorable Prime Minister of India we would now like to request you to kindly expedite the process so that admissions to IIT, Varanasi can commence from the next session (July 2008) itself and provide hopes to the newly admitted students through the IIT-JEE.
Incidentally the first batch of admissions to the other three new IITs (Patna, Hyderabad,.) will begin this year itself with only a rudimentary infrastructure and faculty, whereas IT-BHU, being a very old institution, is already equipped with adequate infrastructure and class faculty to commence the next academic session as an IIT.
We humbly request you to kindly initiate the proceedings along with the concerned authorities so that the initial momentum is translated into a gazette notification for admission into IIT, Varanasi from July 2008 session, while the measures for autonomy and other legal formalities may be fulfilled in the due course.
We thank you once again for the efforts that you have made with a hope that IIT, Varanasi finally see the light of day.
