I am writing this petition for my niece. She is in Portage County Jail right now, and she will be leaving for Marysville Prison sometime next week. She has been in jail for 3 months. I do not think that she should be going to prison. This is the very first time she has ever been in trouble with the law for anything. The man she was living with had a meth lab in the house. My niece did not have anything to do with it at all. She did not want it in the house, and fought with him all the time about it. She left him several times over this matter. She and her kids were never around when the "cooking" took place. Her kids were tested and they tested clean. There was nothing in their systems, no drugs, no chemicals, nothing. She was not involved in it at all. He got sentenced to 7 years in prison. My niece got sentenced to 2 years in prison. I understand that meth labs are running rampant. But do unwilling partners have to do time for it too? I think it's very unfair that she has to go to prison for something that she had no part in, and fought to have it taken out of her home. She actually knew nothing about how to make it, and how dangerous it was. She did not want to be involved in any of it. She didn't want it to go on. Please sign this petition to stop her from going to prison. She is not a criminal, and she does not deserve to be in prison at all. I want you to know that I am 100\% against drugs and alcohol. But I also believe strongly in being fair. And this is not fair. She has spent enough time behind bars for something she didn't do. Prison should just not be happening in this case. Whatever happened to going easy on first time offenders anyway? Two years in prison for her first time being in trouble is far too harsh of a punishment especially when she didn't do the crime. My niece is honestly a very sweet girl who does not deserve this. There are people in jail with her for the same thing right now who are not getting as harsh a punishment as she is. And these people are on their 2nd and 3rd drug offenses. There is one in there right now who has many felony charges on her, and she only got 6 months in county jail. Where's the justice? They are making an example out of my niece, and it's not necessary and it's not fair. The court is acting like this is the first meth lab bust ever. I heard they wanted to send a message to the community about meth labs. Don't send a message to the community at the expense of my niece. Send the message using someone who is actually making meth. She never did it, and she never possessed any chemicals to make it with. It was not her that did it. The one who did is going to be in prison for the next 7 years, why does she have to go too? I think the message was sent when they gave the person responsible for it 7 years in prison. There are people in this county who have gotten arrested for the same thing, and they are out walking the streets as we speak. Please see the unfairness in this, and help my niece! This is devastating and heartbreaking for the whole family! Her kids miss her alot and this is so hard on them. One last thing...I am in agreement with the court system in getting drug offenders off the streets being anti-drugs myself. But I beg of you, please don't put someone in prison who doesn't deserve to be there. The only thing she did wrong was not leave the home permanently. If I could of had the chance to talk to the judge, maybe I could have gotten her to see that. Thank you for reading and signing this petition!
