For the urgent attention of:
The United Nations Human Rights Council Members and the United Nations Security Council Members (China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, the United States, Austria, Japan, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Viet Nam, Costa Rica, Mexico, Croatia, and Turkey):
We, the signers of this petition, know that many Iranians have recently endured different kinds of torture, attack, and slandering, deserving the support from the international community. The recent human rights violations in the Islamic Republic of Iran have muffled the voices silently screaming for freedom after the Iranian elections. These voices are of teachers, students, journalists, and bloggers, all trying to support and protest for a just democracy. Each day many of the supporters of peace have been tortured or murdered. Large numbers of violations occur in prisons daily, yet recently such violations have occurred on public streets, screaming for public support from the international community. As Neda Agha-Soltans friend asked, let us "please let the world know," we are seeking the same goal.
Relevant Facts:
Thus far, the Iranian government has released 140 prisoners in one of several conciliatory gestures aimed at deflecting further criticism. This is because they are clearly aware of their current human rights violations and are trying to prevent media attention and international community involvement. Some of the prisoners they released said they watched fellow detainees being beaten to death by guards in overcrowded, stinking holding pens. Others say they had their fingernails ripped off or were forced to lick filthy toilet bowls. The accounts of prison abuse in Irans postelection crackdown have set off growing outrage among Iranians, including some prominent conservatives. More bruised corpses have been returned to families, as well as some hospital officials telling human rights workers that they have seen evidence that well over 100 protesters have died since the vote.
Standard of Law:
These steps would augment the existing restrictions mandated by the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the United Nations Resolution 60/251 of the General Assembly establishing the Human Rights Council.
The Undersigned Respectfully Request:
1.That the Islamic Republic of Iran honor its commitment to the United Nations Charter, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and cease torture and the rough penal punishments, especially in accordance with the post election protests.
2. That the international community holds Iran accountable and takes action when human rights violations occur.
