No Casino in Buffalo or Erie County, New York

The Nation-State Gaming Compact Between the Seneca Nation of Indians and the State of New York, allowing an Indian reservation to be carved out of an urban area, is a subterfuge to bypass the New York State constitutional prohibition against Class III gambling, to avoid democratic process, and to ignore the opinions of the citizens who would be affected.
The proposed casino would permanently remove valuable property from the tax rolls.
It would undermine local businesses through unregulated, untaxed, and unfair competition. Depending primarily on local customers, the casino would attract dollars that would otherwise be spent on other recreational venues, such as restaurants, bars, theaters, bowling alleys, museums, and sporting events. Moreover, there would be nothing to prevent the Senecas from selling cigarettes, alcohol, gasoline, or any other item without collecting sales tax. In city after city, casinos have meant the ruin of local businesses.
The proposed casino would lead to increases in gambling addiction, embezzlement, robbery, prostitution, bankruptcy, spousal abuse, and suicide.
For all these reasons, we urge the elected officials of our community to show leadership and do whatever is in their power to reject casino gambling and to promote instead the kinds of development that will make Buffalo and Erie County a better place to live and raise our children.
