No Wastewater dumping on Kauai!

We, the people of Hawaii and past, present and future visitors to Hawaii, do NOT approve of the Proposed Water Pollution Control Permit for Sunrise Capital, Inc. under NPDES Permit No. HI 0021654.

Sunrise Capital proposes to release up to 30 million gallons a day of wastewater effluent and treated shrimp remains from their shrimp farm into shoreline waters near Kekaha, Kauai, Hawaii. This shoreline is one of the most pristine, mostly untouched shorelines in the United States and is a public resource that should be shared by all. Previous discharges by previous owners were a local environmental disaster that killed fish, attracted more sharks, and stunk up the whole area thereby reducing recreational and personal use of these shoreline areas.

- We do not agree that public resources should be used as a dumping ground for commercial waste.

- We do not agree that there will be no environmental impact from this wastewater effluent. Sunrise Capital proposes to release the equivalent of up to 45.5 Olympic sized swimming pools of this ammonia, nitrogren, and phosphourus rich wastewater into the ocean daily. At the very least this will lead to eutrophication (elevated nutrient levels). In a worst case scenario, hypoxic dead zones, such as those seen in the Gulf of Mexico, may arise from these concentrated discharges.

- We would like to request a public hearing on this matter.

Kauai's natural resources are a national treasure and they should be protected as such. Please do not let Sunrise Capital ruin the water quality and way of life for people on Kauai. These shrimp farm discharges could also cause irreparable damage to Kauai's tourist industry which is Kauai's top source of employment. We implore you to seek public input on this far reaching and important decision process.
