NY supports a Department of Peace

We seek a Senate sponsored version of legislation establishing a US Department of Peace.

On April 8, 2003, Congressman Dennis Kucinich introduced HR1673 calling for the establishment of the Department of Peace at the executive level of the US Government. This non-partisan legislation would establish nonviolence as an organizing principle of American society, providing the U.S. President with an array of peace-building policy options for domestic and international use.

I support this bill and urge you to sponsor the senate version. It is especially fitting that this bill should find a first senate sponsor here in New York, as New York was the first place to bear the impact of the terrorism of September 11, 2001, which so fundamentally changed the concept of security around the globe. The US role as world power could not be more clear, our duty to lead first by example could not be more imperative.

The passage of this Bill is vital to the health and safety of this nation, our world, and future generations. It offers practical alternatives to violence at home and abroad, and provides preventative strategies for dealing with issues before they erupt into war. Please take the historical step of sponsoring this important legislation.

Bill Highlights
* Create a Cabinet-level position of Secretary of Peace
* Establish the first US Peace Academy
* Teach non-violence to all ages of children in our society
* Dedicate one day a year as a National day of Peace
* Facilitate the development of peace summits at which parties to a conflict may gather under carefully prepared conditions to promote non-violent communication and mutually beneficial solutions
* Develop new programs that relate to the societal challenges of school violence, guns, racial or ethnic violence, violence against gays, lesbians and other minorities, and police-community relations disputes
* Submit to the President recommendations for reductions in weapons of mass destruction, and make annual reports to the President on the sale of arms from the United States to other nations, with analysis of the impact of such sales on the defense of the United States and how such sales effect peace
