We, the undersigned, ask that Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. release the HP OpenView Service Desk 4.5, which has reached end of sales on 31st of December 2008 and will reach end of support on 31st of December 2009, as free software under any license conformant with the Free Software Definition as defined at http://www.fsf.org/philosophy/free-sw.html. A list of conformant licenses is available at http://www.fsf.org/licenses/license-list.html.
This application is not adding to Hewlett-Packard's bottom line as it is no longer available for sale anywhere. As end of support is nearing, the existing customers who chose not to migrate yet or will be in process of migration will be left without any options to receive support. Additionally, it would provide a valuable starting point for development of similar productivity applications for small organizations.
Releasing this application as free software would offer the customers more choices, and would also increase Hewlett-Packard's visibility in this area by expanding on it's list of open source/free software products.
We hope that Hewlett-Packard will see fit to grant this small request.
